Funded in part by the
Illinois Council on Food and Agricultural Research

Objectives:

Our objective is to compare ovarian granulosa cell health in varying ages of heifers and cows. Specific aims are:

1. To determine the effects of ovarian hormones (FSH & IGF-I) on granulosa cell steroidogenesis between young and old females.

2. To determine the effects of ovarian hormones (FSH & IGF-I) on granulosa cell apoptosis between young and old females.

An in vitro ovarian cell culture system will be used in these proposed studies to determine the effects of hormonal modulators on granulosa cell health. This research has the very strong potential to provide valuable information to prolong the reproductive lifespan of cattle, therefore making the production of cattle more efficient.
